The Municipality of Ras al-Khaimah (RAK) has warned shops against putting up shades without taking any permission.
People selling used cars on roads and those who have erected shades without proper permission for the same purpose are being monitored by the RAK Municipality under a new campaign to stamp out all road violations in the emirate.

The Engineering and Buildings Department at the municipality said random and unlicensed shades were now being removed from across the emirate, particularly on the Mohamed bin Salem, Kuwaiti, Muairidh, and Dahan roads.

Mubarak Al Shamsi, Chairman “ RAK Municipality, said the move was to protect the environment and enhance the image of RAK’s roads and squares. “The drive also gives a boost to the civilisation aspects, and ensures people’s comfort.”

Aisha Darweesh, Director of the department, said tough penalties, including hefty fines, shall be slapped against erring shops, institutions, and landlords.

The RAK Municipality has also adopted a new mechanism to curb sales of used vehicles on the roads of the emirate in line with the municipal decree No1/2009.

Mohammed Al Asam, Director-General of the municipality, said parking or offering a vehicle for sale on the road rather than the designated area was a sheer violation of law.

“This is not acceptable at all; it obstructs traffic and causes serious accidents.”

As per the new scheme, the municipality shall shift and impound the vehicle being sold in such a manner and fine the owner for the same.

“The municipality shall deal with violators with zero tolerance and a hefty fine up to AED1,000 shall be slapped, along with another AED150 for shifting the vehicle involved to the impoundment yard,” he warned.

Khalifa Maktoum, Director of Public Health and Environment Department at the municipality, said they have launched an intensive campaign to make people aware about the new mechanism to overcome such a negative phenomenon.

“Should the violator fail to pay the fine “ AD1,150, within a week, Dh10 shall be charged against every passing day.”

Failing to pay the accumulating fines in six months, will give the RAK Municipality the full right to offer the impounded vehicle for sale in a public auction, he added.
