11% of Accidents by Red Light Jumpers in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI – Reviewing the latest traffic statistics, it has been shown that skipping a red light got things rolling to 11 per cent among the primary causes of traffic accidents in the Capital Emirate of Abu Dhabi during the first quarter of 2013.

On account of that, the traffic police called for the motorists and the road users to slow down and decrease the speed as they draw near the traffic lights and the junctions and to ward off increasing speed when traffic lights turn on from green to amber before turning to red.

Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Head of Public Relations at Abu Dhabi Police’s Traffic and Patrols Department, pointed out that the severity of traffic accidents because of running the traffic signals at a high speed as it leads to serious collisions with other vehicles coming from other directions often put drivers at risk leaving serious repercussions in deaths and severe injuries.

He added saying that those who violate the laws or the offenders receive eight black points on their driving record and a AED800 fine, and their vehicles are confiscated for 15 days.

Last month, state of the art triple function traffic cameras fixed in at 40 junctions in Abu Dhabi city became operational and serviceable.

It is the first phase of a strategic plan to reinforce traffic monitoring across the capital emirate.

Besides snapping pictures of speeding drivers and motorists or those jumping a red light, the cameras will help police monitor traffic during an accident owing to a built-in, high definition video camera, which stores and renders and distributes all day and all night. The speed radar will be set with a buffer limit against the posted speed limits.

After this initial phase, these triple-function cameras will be installed and operated elsewhere, according to Brigadier General Hussein Al Harethi, Head of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

The second and third phases will include Al Ain and the Western Region, to better cover high-risk areas and intersections where a remarkable number of accidents have taken place, Brig. Al Harethi said.

“The goal is to bring down and decrease the number of accidents at traffic-light intersections, which are the most dangerous,” he said.

As part of the Arab Traffic Week’s awareness program, Col. Al Ameri called for motorists and urged them to reduce and bring down their speed at traffic light junctions and to stop completely to the limit at a red light.
