Dubai Police has warned car sellers of fraudsters in the emirate looking to victimize vulnerable car sellers. The warning by Dubai Police has been issued in wake of the recent surge recorded in car selling frauds. A story published in Gulf News a few days ago, highlighted the same issue where an Indian Expat became the latest victim of a conman who used a dud cheque to take away the expat’s SUV. Presenting the car sellers with Dud Cheques is the new ploy used by fraudsters to victimize the innocent car sellers in Dubai. The Indian Expat Mr. K.M. Basheer also got hoaxed in a similar way.
The New Method used by Fraudsters to Trick Car Sellers in Dubai
The new modus operandi of fraudsters in Dubai involves two men who act as close relatives and contact a car seller through popular classified websites. The fraudsters then call the car seller and show their interest in the vehicle and set up a meeting to buy the car. They then offer a certain amount in advance to get done with the reregistration of the car and urge the seller (through different deceptive arguments) to accept the remaining amount in form a cheque. The convincing tone of the con men, perceived genuine by the car seller leads him to accept the cheque which later turns out to be a dud cheque.
As reported by Gulf News, an Indian expat Mr. K.M Basheer filed a similar case with the Al Ghusais Police Station. The victim of the fraud, Mr. K.M Basheer revealed how he got trapped by a conman who approached him for buying his car through a popular classified website. The conman agreed to pay Mr. Basheer AED 108,000 for his SUV which was close to the seller’s expectation (AED 110,000). Mr. Basheer accepted the offer and a meeting got set between the two parties to close the deal.
Both parties met at the Tasjeel Office where the registration transfer of the vehicle had to take place. The conman came with another man who he called his brother, named Khalid. The conman convinced Mr. Basheer for the registration transfer by paying him AED 15, 000 in cash as reported by Gulf News. The car got registered in Khalid’s name and it was decided that while the registration process completes, the other man will bring the remaining money. He went and never came back as he had to rush to attend his ill wife in a hospital. Khalid, then presented Mr. Basheer, a cheque for the balance amount and left with the car. Feeling duped, Mr. Basheer, reached the Al Ghusais Police Station and filed a complaint. He was asked by Police to first try and cash the cheque which he did to find out, it was a dud cheque. Khalid, when contacted by Mr. Basheer assured him of sending another cheque but it also got bounced. After that, Khaled never appeared again. The case got registered with Police but the SUV was exported to a neighboring country in no time as reported by Gulf News.
Conman on a Rolls Royce
A similar case was also reported in Dubai a few months back when a conman on Rolls Royce duped a car seller by presenting him with a dud cheque. The car seller got baffled by the lavish look of conman and fell into his trap. He accepted a cheque for car’s payment and sold his car. The cheque bounced later as happened in the recent case.

Problem with Selling a Car through Classifieds
Classified websites only provide a platform where car sellers and buyers can approach each other but these websites don’t have any secure method to ascertain the authenticity of any user. Car sellers can easily by exploited by con men due to lack of check and balance on these classified websites. The biggest risk is associated with the payment of cars. Selling and buying cars through classified websites become highly risky as payments can never be safe owing to the absence of a payment gateway governed by the classified sites.
