Abu Dhabi traffic authorities have left no stone unturned in making sure that only the mechanically fit vehicles are allowed to be driven on the roads. To increase the scrutiny of motorists driving vehicles with expired registration, traffic authorities started a campaign at the start of 2018 and installed multiple monitoring devices across the emirate to detect such vehicles. It also included the installation of the latest Abu Dhabi toll gates that can efficiently scan vehicles with expired registration.

Advanced Toll Gates Catch Vehicles with Expired Registration

The traffic law in the UAE doesn’t permit motorists to drive vehicles with expired registration beyond the one month grace period. The one month grace period allows motorists to get their vehicles physically examined and complete the process of renewal of vehicle registration, which has now been made quite simple by traffic authorities.

The new toll gates on many roads including Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Highway were installed in April and have been functional since April 15, 2018. The traffic fine for driving a vehicle with expired registration was also increased in April from AED 10 per month to AED 500 that only needs to be paid once. Recently, it caught many motorists by surprise when they were charged with the new fine as they were not aware of the change in fines.

Motorists must know that the fine for driving a vehicle with expired registration was increased in the month of April and besides the AED 500 fine, the offender will also face penalties of 4 black points and vehicle confiscation for 7 days. Within the first two weeks of the installation of new toll gates, as many as 18,640 vehicles were impounded as the registration of these vehicles was not renewed even after the grace period. The newly installed toll gates are extremely efficient in their scanning abilities and can accurately scan all the vehicles passing beneath them. Traffic authorities have also planned to use these tolls in the same way as Dubai’s Salik System in future.

Understanding the Process of Renewal of Car Registration in Abu Dhabi

The renewal of a vehicle’s registration is one of the legal requirements to drive in Abu Dhabi. Motorists cannot drive a vehicle with expired registration after the one month grace period. This process has to be followed every year as it ensures that every vehicle on Abu Dhabi roads is mechanically fit and safe to drive. To complete the process of registration renewal of a vehicle, motorists must submit the registration card of the vehicle, the physical inspection report and insurance report of 13 months.

The process ensures that all vehicles go through a physical inspection and only those vehicles are deemed eligible for renewal of registration that pass the vehicle inspection test. If a vehicle fails the inspection test, motorists can use the one month grace period for the required maintenance services or repairs of the vehicle. All these requirements must be completed for the renewal of a vehicle’s registration.
