Tailgating is one of the most dangerous traffic violations in Abu Dhabi and traffic authorities have warned motorists against committing this violation as it can potentially cause a dangerous road accident on a busy road. Authorities have revealed latest stats for tailgating violations in the emirate, which clearly show that a large number of dangerous road accidents were caused by tailgaters during the first quarter of 2018. Tailgating refers to a failure to leave sufficient distance between vehicles, which can increase the risk of a dangerous collision between two or more vehicles. Not leaving enough distance from the vehicle ahead clearly exhibits the reckless driving behavior of motorists and authorities have now planned to nab down errant drivers involved in this dangerous traffic offence.
Official Statement on Tailgating Violations
Authorities have recently released a report that clearly highlights the need for improvement in the reckless driving behavior of motorists. According to this report, 13% of the road accidents recorded during the first quarter of 2018 were caused by tailgating. Motorists failed to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, which resulted in dangerous accidents on different major roads across Abu Dhabi. Authorities also revealed that some of the dangerous road accidents also caused fatalities and serious injuries.
Lt Col Dr Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Deputy Director of the Traffic Department at the Traffic and Patrols Department has advised motorists to leave sufficient distance between vehicles in order to avoid dangerous road situations on busy roads. Traffic Penalties for Tailgating
Tailgating is a frequently committed traffic violation in Abu Dhabi and most of the tailgaters are repeat offenders. However, the repeat offenders must know that fines and black points against their driving license may accumulate to an extent that their license might get cancelled and paying hefty fines may become considerably difficult. For a tailgating violation, motorists in Abu Dhabi have to face a fine of AED 400 while 4 black points are issued against the driving license of the offender.
Motorists must be careful of the fact that the driving license gets cancelled if the black points against it amount to 24. There is a long and challenging procedure that needs to be followed to get the new license as no one is allowed to drive in the UAE without a driving license. Tailgating can result in dangerous road accidents and the offenders involved in causing a dangerous road accident can also be detained and penalized by the court according to the law.
