Car sellers in the UAE and especially in Dubai must be aware of a Conman who drives a Rolls-Royce and is busy in fooling the sellers who post an ad for selling their cars on classified websites. In two recent incidents, a Pakistani and a Dubai-based man have been deprived of their payments which they were to receive for cars they sold to the Fraudster. The serial fraudster, who tricks car sellers by driving a Rolls-Royce, convinces them to receive a cheque as mode of car payment and eventually dupes them. Media reports suggest that the serial fraudster has so far tricked dozens of car sellers and has run away with their cars without paying them any money.
How the Recent Frauds Occurred
In the most recent incident, it involved a Dubai based man Mohammad Omar aged 28, who posted an ad on a popular classified website to sell his 2014 Mini Countryman at an expected price of Dh120,000. Soon after he posted his car’s ad, he received a call from the Conman who showed his immense interest in the car and wanted to buy it as soon as possible. A meeting got setup for the evening next day and conman appeared with a man who he called his brother. The fraudster introduced himself as Abdulrahaman Al Falasi and told that he belonged to a rich family and wanted to buy a car for his younger brother. He needed it early as he had to fly to Saudi Arabia the next day to perform Umra.
Getting tricked from his convincing tone, Mohammad Omar who was selling his car called him to the showroom and completed paperwork. While getting paperwork done, he came to know that the fraudster will pay him through cheque as he had no cash. After not agreeing to him in the first go, Omar got agreed to a persuading tone of the fraudulent buyer. Next day, he was shocked to know that the bank had already closed that account to which the cheque belonged. Only then he got informed by the bank that another such incident with a Pakistani man had also taken place recently.

Why Selling a Car through Classifieds and Private Dealers is not safe
Selling a car in Dubai and all other cities of the UAE asks you to be smart and active in your dealings with buyers. It is never a good idea to receive a cheque as mode of payment when the buyer is a stranger to you. Classifieds are an excellent source of advertising your cars for sale but not necessarily to sell your cars. It involves a number of risks when you sell a car through classifieds. The biggest risk is that you don’t know buyers and you need to do the whole paperwork on your own. It is highly suggested to either involve a car expert you know or a professional dealer while dealing with the buyers who are strangers to you. From the money scams to privacy threats, selling a car through classifieds can prove to be an awful experience.
On the other hand, selling your car to private dealers who lack a license to operate is also full of dangers. They either won’t pay you the right amount for your car or won’t pay at all and run away with your car without paying you any money. You need to make sure that the dealer you are looking to sell your car is recognized in the market and has a proper license to provide his services.
