The international engine competition has been running for over 17 years now whose aim is to determine the best car engine of the year. The winner this year is the BMW’s clever i8 hybrid from all the categories which it dominated other cars in the car rating due to the highly rated and super performance engine. The i8’s 1.5liter 3-cylinder with a 357 horsepower hybrid powertrain out competed the Ferrari, Tesla and McLaren to earn a higher position in the car assessment in performance, reliability and speed among others. The top award of the competition is determined by a panel of international automotive journalists.
There are eight categories based on engine displacement including: awards of the best new engines, best green engines, best performance engine and the best of overall. The auto industry is facing harder new emissions and standards which is not good for the fans of the naturally aspirated engine. There is now a replacement for displacement where Inline 3-cyclinder engines that used to be the preserve of Japan’s tiny Kei cars, are now proliferating in small cars and coupled with forced induction. This has brought about change in these car released on the car market today. The only normally aspirated engine to win an award was the Ferrari’s 4.5-litre V8, a unit that has been replaced in the new 488 GTB by a slightly smaller turbocharged engine.
The BMW’s clever i8 hybrid topped up the list for the best new engine and the best between 1.4L and 1.8L. Surprisingly, it also almost beat Tesla’s Model S powertrain for the best green engine on its way to the overall winner.
