Fourteen major streets’ names in Abu Dhabi have been changed as part of the capital’s new addressing system.

Some of the names are a tribute to iconic Emirati leaders’ names and others hold geographical significance.

Street number six – popularly known as Al Najda Street – will now be renamed Fatima bint Mubarak Street. This street runs from the Corniche Road to Hazza bin Zayed Street on the Eastern side of Abu Dhabi Island.

The renaming of the street honours the “Mother of the UAE” for the important contributions she has made to society, the municipality said.

“The names assigned to these 14 major streets reiterate the UAE’s desire to commemorate our prominent leaders for their vision, leadership and contribution in building the UAE society,” the municipality said.

New streets include:

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street, formerly Al Salam Street

Khalifa bin Zayed First Street, formerly Khalifa Street

Sultan Bin Zayed First Street, formerly Fourth Street or Muroor Road

Shakhbout bin Sultan Street, formerly Al Saada Street

Mubarak bin Mohammed Street, formerly Twenty Sixth Street

Salama bint Butti Street, formerly Twenty Third Street
