Peugeot’s newest concept-turned-reality is a reflection of a dream that everyone shares: a practical, sporty car that feels at home in the garage or on the raceway. What results is the most powerful French car in the world, available for purchase as of late 2013.
Originally unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto show in 2009, the new 2014 RCZ R has a 1.6-liter THP engine under the hood that can produce up to 260 horsepower. It is of course sleek and luxurious, filled with a leather interior, a leather-covered gear-shifter and aluminum accents – everything needed to fulfill such a dream. The diesel models offer a 2.0-liter twin-turbo engine, making them even more competitive in their class. Both types of engine have a 6-speed transmission – the diesels only have manuals, but the THP engines offer an automatic. However, who wants to cruise around in a car like this? You have to feel the gears and take control of the machine!
There are quite a few other perks for this car. You want to go fast? You have a twin-turbo engine with aluminum pistons and low-friction bearings that as of 2014 tops out at 155 mph. You want to drive around sharp corners? You have a front-wheel drive vehicle that has torque steering and limited slip differential. It is wider and stouter than most cars, allowing it to hug the road just perfectly. You are concerned about the affect this car has on the environment? The RCZ R has very low emissions as it is, but the lowest choice among the various styles is the diesel engine.
So the real question is, how did Peugeot go from, say, the Saloon – a small, chunky convertible from the 1960s – to this, an elegant representation of style and speed? The answer is Peugeot Sport. For once, the mainstream car manufacturer sought advice from its brother company, Peugeot Sport, the designer of record-breaking racecars.
Down to the nitty gritty. How much is this going to cost? MSRP will run somewhere around $45,000, which is quite a bit less than its main competitor, the Audi TT S. Either way, it is set to get somewhere in the range of 45 mpg!
So just to sum up: most powerful car in the world for its engine size; excellent handling; high mpg for a luxury vehicle; a reasonable price.
