The Sheikh Zayed Street and Tunnel project has picked up the Infrastructure Project of the Year Award, at the Construction Week Awards 2013.
The annual event had ceremonies in Oman, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia in the lead up to the final showdown in Dubai on December 11.
The project, in the capital, falls under the responsibility of Abu Dhabi Municipality.
“Parsons is honored to have contributed to this award-winning project, which improves pedestrian movement and bicycle access leading to a more sustainable urban design while allowing better connectivity between Abu Dhabi landmarks,” said Guy Mehula, Parsons MENA+ president.
Parsons is the company that provided design and construction supervision services to the project, which has reduced surface traffic in the central business district by up to 50 per cent.
The tunnel opened just over a year ago in a ceremony that marked the last step of the multi-phase Salam Street redevelopment project that began in 2007.
It runs from Delma Street, at the Sea Palace junction, along to the Corniche and Mina Road.
The covered section of the tunnel, which was given its name by the President, Sheikh Khalifa, runs for 2.4 kilometers. The open section covers 1.8km.
