The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that the South Korean car maker has recalled several of its models including the Optima due to a fault with the brake light switch that could lead to accidents on the road if left unchecked.
KIA saw the car rating of many of its models take a turn for the worse in the car market when the problem came to the attention to those who already owned the cars. Its fellow South Korean automobile manufacturer was also faced with the same problem and at a slightly greater scale and both issued a joint recall so as to replace the switch.
According to reports from the road safety agency, several KIA models – the Optima inclusive – manufactured between 2007 and 2011 have a brake switch that could malfunction causing the brake lights to not illuminate, which could lead to accidents. The faulty switch could also lead to the cruise control not cancelling with the brake pedal, the push-button starter not working properly and the shift interlock not disengaging causing the transmission to be stuck in the “Park” position.
KIA is thus recalling cars from the aforementioned time period to do a thorough car assessment so that it can fix the problem in the affected units.
