At this time, we live in an age that is populated by SUV’S and 4×4’s. Recently, the latest iteration of the Jeep SRT8 was test drove in Dubai. Some of the external changes to the new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee are very minimal, and the SRT8 with a wider fender is no different – a selection of new wheels, redone tailgate and rear lamps, bumper and headlights up front, and a grille piece that has been slightly reshaped. The most noticeable features would be the amazing new LED running lamps that have been integrated into the HID headlights. However, that’s standard and can be found on the most basic Grand Cherokee nowadays.
The interior of this muscular SRT looks very similar to the top-spec Grand Cherokee, with it’s stitched leather dash and 8.4 inch touch screen, with the only noticeable differences being the beefy sports seats in the front, the steering wheel which is slightly meatier, and the faux carbon fiber style trim. There is enough space to fit adults of most normal, average sizes.
Still being powered by the same 6.4 liter V8 engine that makes 470 horsepower, there wasn’t really a significant reason to up the power, especially with the 630 Nm of torque by means of all wheel drive and a brand new 8 speed automatic, which is shifted with an electronic knobby-shaped device.
The all new automatic features two different modes – Sport and Drive – which will alter the characteristics of the transmission independently from the SRT’s five “Selec-Track” modes of driving – Track, Snow, Tow, Sport and Auto. The torque distributions throughout the five different modes will range from 50:50 to 30:70, with the latter being in the track mode.
To the surprise of most, the ride in this SUV is very compliant, with a small hint of firmness that’s nothing worse than driving a big-rimmed BMW X5. Road and wind noise never go farther than the moderate levels at about 140 kph; however, the subdued hum of the engine can always be heard.
Handling of this vehicle is rather stable, even on the gravel. The firm maneuvering of the vehicle does give a little feedback, while the large brakes are linear and quick to respond. Basically, the new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 seems to be just another capable super-SUV. However the upgrades only make it better than before.
