The project adhered to the new FIA regulations which required a size limit of 3.0 liters in the engine. Enzo Ferrari then decided to put a V12 that meets the requirements of the International Automobile Federation. The P3 was confronted by the formidable Ford GT40, and even with V12 engine of almost 4,000 cm ³ and 420 hp, could not overcome the model of the Blue Oval brand that hid under the hood a V8 of 7.0 liters. The P3 was not a model of success in competitions, however, the 330 P4 was practically invincible.

The engine was a 3.0 liter engine that delivered 250 hp and enabled the car to reach a maximum speed of 265 km / h. All this thanks to the low weight of 750 kg.
