Tailgating has always been a huge concern to Dubai police, especially with the incremental death number caused by this. According to the police’s records, number of deaths reached 226 in 2014, and 11 between January and May 2015.
Since the majority of these accidents caused by tailgating happen on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, followed by Emirates Road, there will be intensifying patrols on these roads in particular during the “Keep A Safe Distance” traffic campaign, which will last for two consecutive months. It is worth noting that the police will monitor tailgaters in unmarked cars.
According to the police records the following number of fines were issued for those who don’t keep a safe distance between vehicles:
In 2014 → 69,964 fines.
In 2015 (four months only) → 19,975 fines.
It should be known that cars speeding at 120km should leave a distance of at least 104 meters. Those who violate the ‘safe distance’ traffic rule will receive four black points and a fine of Dh400.
The Dubai Traffic Police is aiming to have people abiding by rules at all times, this is why they believe that when people see a police car the chances of respecting the law becomes higher.
Awareness campaign will be carried out in malls and streets, where members from Dubai Police will speak to the public about the dangers of tailgating and not leaving enough distance.
