Mercedes-Benz SLK Recalled for Air Bag Issue

The Mercedes Benz has recalled the SLK due to a problem that exists in the air bag control system.

This recall is likely to see the sporty convertible from the German car maker take a hit in the car market as relates to car rating. Mercedes has been known to make high quality cars and the SLK is quite a specimen when it comes to aesthetics and performance especially speed.

When a speedy car is questioned about its safety, this is sure to get those doing a car purchase to take a pause and rethink the acquisition if it is quite likely to be dangerous. Mercedes Benz has however revealed that only 71 cars are affected.

In these 71 units of the 2013 SLK250 and SLK350 models built from October 9 2012 to November 20 of the same year, there is an issue with the cars’ air bag systems. The problem has been isolated in the occupant classification system. This is the system responsible for determining whether a child seat or a lightweight person is sitting in the front passenger seat and then determine whether the airbag should be deployed in the event of a crash.

The system in these cars was incorrectly calibrated and therefore would identify a lightweight person in the passenger seat as a child seat and thus not deploy the air bag in case of a crash resulting in increased chances of injury.
