It has been looming in the Emirate of Sharjah that road signs there are up in the air for a new face to help drivers and road users make their journeys more manageable, faster and shorter. Accordingly, the Traffic Engineering Department of Sharjah Department of Public Works (DPW) hit the ground running a comprehensive traffic study of way finding and location spotting and public addressing system to improve and make remarkable strides in terms of guide signs in the emirate itself. The strategic study aims at implementing and putting a way finding system in action that can provide navigation and guidance to vehicles’ drivers to easily get to their destinations and cut down the time and effort for that.
It is worthy to mention that this study itself rings the bell for the need for such a system due to the rapid growth of Sharjah city and the light footed steps the emirate that is going through.
On this subject, Engineer Muhsen Balwan, Manager of Traffic Engineering Department, said: “The project involves implementing a good shaped way finding system for vehicles and pedestrians that will consider the content, sizes, color codes, materials and location of sign boards. The system will also take into account the maximum speed limits on different categories of roads in Sharjah. The system will be applied on base of the most up to date international information system. The first period of the project will include evaluating the existing system to find how effective it is, then in the second period, we will upgrade the currently used system, while the implementation will be in a third separate period.”
Balwan said one of the top priorities of the system is to create an accurate integrated way finding system that can help road users easily identify and reach their destinations in Sharjah city, and Middle and Eastern areas. The system will also play a role in eliminating traffic congestions and accidents probabilities since drivers will be focused while driving.
The system will serve different classes and categories of road users, including emergency services, which will indirectly develop and reinforce the economy of Sharjah. It’s expected that the outcome and the result of the project can be linked to recently introduced Sharjah DPW smartphone application. It will also contribute towards achieving the trend of the Sharjah Government to develop technological projects to meet the community’s requirements.
