A recent survey conducted in UAE showed the lack of care shown by the motorists towards traffic regulations as they failed to use indicators while driving. One of the main reasons for the recent surge in the road accidents in UAE is; Lane Swerving (poor lane changing) and that happens when you don’t use indicators properly. The figures of the Interior Ministry show that in 2015, 21% of the fatalities in UAE road accidents occurred due to Lane Swerving.
Survey and Research Results for UAE Motorists
The survey was conducted by YouGov and they observed a sample of 1,000 motorists and studied their behaviors for the use of indicators. The results of the study showed that only 15% of the drivers in UAE used indicators while driving.
Research Conducted by RoadSafety UAE and QIC
While the survey recorded 15% of the motorists using the indicators, a research conducted by RoadSafety UAE and Qatar Insurance Company (QIC) revealed that 90% of the drivers believed that using indicators raises road safety. But when it comes to applying indicators in reality, only a handful of them did so. An interesting facet of this research showed that 67% of the respondents claimed that they utilized indicators all the time whereas only 15% of them confirmed that they observed other people using indicators.

Age, Nationality and Locality Based Results
The study conducted by RoadSafety UAE and Qatar Insurance Company showed the following results for those signaling the indicators every time on the basis of their age, nationalities and localities.

- 56% of Youth use indicators
- 78% of People Aged over 40 use Indicators
Based on Nationality
- 54% of Emiratis use Indicators
- 85% of the Westerners use Indicators
Based on Locality
- 56% of the Abu Dhabi Drivers use Indicators
- 73% of Dubai Drivers use Indicators
Reasons for not Using Indicators

- Habitual Avoidance: 16%
- Inexperience: 16%
- Weakness: 9%

Traffic Authorities in UAE are trying their best to improve the road safety measures but traffic situation in UAE will not improve to a satisfying level till the motorists understand their own responsibilities and start using indicators appropriately.
