Details of the Road Safety Stats Revealed by Abu Dhabi Police

The road safety stats revealed by Abu Dhabi Police clearly highlight a major improvement in Abu Dhabi during the first four months of 2018. As compared to the first four months of 2017, here is how the road safety situation improved in the same period during 2018:

An Overview of Road Safety Situation and Traffic Problems of Abu Dhabi

The road safety situation in Abu Dhabi deteriorated quite badly in 2016 as the number of road accidents and their consequent road deaths increased tremendously. Traffic problems including reckless driving behavior exhibited by motorists and regular traffic congestions made the situation even worse during 2016. As a result, some stringent actions were taken by authorities to improve the road safety situation in the emirate and to nab down traffic offenders more effectively.

In 2017, the newly amended traffic law was implemented in the UAE that introduced stricter penalties against dangerous traffic violations and it has, so far, proved to be an excellent step taken by the authorities for discouraging motorists against committing dangerous traffic violations. The road safety stats clearly showed signs of improvement after the implementation of the newly amended traffic law in Abu Dhabi and both road deaths and road accidents decreased in 2017 as compared to 2016. The traffic situation has continued to improve in 2018 as well, however, traffic problems of the emirate are still far from over.

Here are some of the major traffic problems that have continued to deteriorate the road safety situation in Abu Dhabi over the last few years.

  • A high resident to car ratio is a major reason behind frustrating traffic jams observed in Abu Dhabi and across the UAE on a regular basis.
  • A high expatriate population is also a major reason behind many traffic problems of the emirate. The inability of expat drivers to quickly adjust to the traffic culture and driving conditions of the UAE adds to the traffic problems in the country.
  • In recent times, young drivers have been found to be involved in most of the dangerous road accidents recorded across the UAE. Even in the first four months of 2018, young drivers, that is, drivers aged between 18-30 years caused 46% of the total road accidents in Abu Dhabi.
  • Reckless driving behavior of motorists is another major threat to road safety situation in Abu Dhabi. As many as 115,000 traffic violations were recorded by traffic monitoring radars during the first four months of 2018.

How the Traffic Authorities Plan to Further Improve the Road Safety Situation in Abu Dhabi?

Moving forward, Abu Dhabi Police plans to further improve the road safety situation in the emirate by expanding the scope of its efforts. Major General Ali Khalfan Al Dhaheri, Director of Central Operations at Abu Dhabi Police said the installation of many new smart traffic monitoring systems has helped a great deal in improving the traffic monitoring standards of Abu Dhabi Police. He stated that a number of new surveillance cameras and 14 smart towers were recently installed on external roads while the Police patrols had also been increased to further improve the road safety situation.

He also mentioned that parents had a great role to play in developing a safe driving approach amongst young drivers who can commit dangerous driving mistakes because of their lack of exposure to challenging driving conditions. Al Dhaheri suggested that besides all the efforts of traffic authorities, the road safety situation can only improve drastically if motorists adopt safe driving habits and avoid repeating dangerous driving mistakes.
