The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has made an announcement about a major new development concerning motorists in Dubai. As per the announcement, the car registration renewal service will now be available only through smart platforms (online) from July 22, 2018. With this move, the Roads and Transport Authority aims at improving the standard of its offerings for motorists in Dubai by migrating most of its essential services to smart platforms. It means that motorists will not be able to apply for the renewal of registration of their vehicles through RTA’s customer service centres and this service will only be available through the RTA website or Dubai Drive App. RTA has announced that seven other services will also be migrated to smart platforms soon.
Details of the Official Announcement by RTA
RTA is a modern-day transport body that has continued to take several initiatives to improve the standard of transport and licensing services in Dubai. RTA has recently announced that the service of renewal of car registration will now be available only through its online channels that include the RTA website and Dubai Drive App. This initiative will help both the transport body and motorists in making the process of car registration renewal completely hassle-free. The complete migration of this service to smart platforms will help reduce the rush of applicants at RTA facilities and will also streamline the process for motorists who can now apply for the renewal of car registration with just a few taps and clicks. RTA has also decided to migrate seven other services to smart platforms.

Services that RTA Plans to move to Smart Platforms
In addition to the car registration renewal service, the RTA plans to migrate seven other services to smart platforms. With these services migrated, motorists will be able to save the time as they will not need to visit RTA offices and other outlets. These seven services are:
- Printing of the list of registered vehicles
- Return from tour certificate
- First owner registration certificate
- Vehicle ownership certificate
- Re-insurance certificate
- Ownership certificate for lost or damaged vehicle
- Clearance certificate
All these services will soon be available only through smart platforms and motorists should be aware of this major change to avoid any unnecessary delay in applying for a particular service. It is important to note that delaying renewal of car registration beyond the 30-day grace period levies strict penalties on motorists.

Penalties for Non-Renewal of Car Registration
Driving a vehicle with expired registration is a serious traffic violation in Dubai and motorists should note that Dubai Police has installed traffic monitoring devices on major roads to catch vehicles with expired registration. The penalties for non-renewal of car registration includes a hefty fine of AED 500, 4 black points issued against offender’s license and confiscation of the vehicle for 7 days.
The registration of a vehicle needs to be renewed annually and a grace period of 30 days is given to motorists to complete this process. The renewal of vehicle registration is important to ensure that all vehicles pass a fitness test and are deemed fit to be driven on Dubai roads.

Official Statement on the Move to Make Car Registration Renewal Online Only
Abdullah Yousuf Al Ali, CEO of RTA’s Licensing Agency said that the new initiative to make car registration renewal service available only through smart platforms is part of RTA’s efforts to divert all important services to smart and e-channels. This initiative is carried out in line with the directives of the UAE government to reduce the rush of visitors at the service centres. It will make the process of renewal of car registration absolutely hassle-free and also save the time of motorists. Anyone from anywhere in Dubai can now apply for the car registration renewal if they have access to the internet.
Authorities have, however, informed motorists that the report for physical inspection test of their vehicle will still have to be collected from RTA’s vehicle testing centres while all other formalities of the process need to be completed online. The results of the physical test will be uploaded online instantly after which motorists can complete the remaining steps of the process. RTA also plans to send the vehicle test reports on the registered emails of the applicants in the near future.
Abdullah Yousuf Al Ali also mentioned that RTA will further expand the scope of its smart services and also offer many other new services online by October this year. These services will include payment of fines, changing vehicle ownership with number plate and renewal of vehicle ownership amongst others.
