Most cars have become safer in recent years, in terms of the protection level provided to the passengers when accidents occur where the modern technologies in the cars are helping drivers to avoid these accidents substantially. With the availability of anti-collision systems more widely in recent years, the “Institute for Highway Safety Insurance” issued the first assessments of its kind on the effectiveness of this technology in the performance of different cars’ models. According to this new report, the institution introduced a list of mid-size cars and SUVs that manufactured between 2013 and 2014 which are characterized by being the safest cars and moderate in terms of prices.
According to the Institute, the electronic control system provided in the cars to strengthen the stability of the car on the road helped to reduce the gravity of falling into a fatal collision by 33%, and reduced the risk of rollover by 73%. There are also a growing number of cars’ models that provide advanced security systems to avoid a collision such as alert the driver of approaching another vehicle or the appearance of any hindrance in the driver way quickly through an audible alarm or visual warnings. While there are some systems that simply firing warning or working to tighten the seat belt or predispose brakes in advance to the sudden stop for any potential collision but the most effective systems that can turn on the brakes automatically if the driver did not take any action fast to avoid the collision. This type of systems is one of the basic building blocks for the engineering future of self-driving cars.
Recently, the institution evaluated the performance of other advanced systems for the collision’s avoidance which are available in about 74 of medium-sized sedan cars in addition to other SUV classes for 2013 and 2014. The evaluation of these cars was based on several grades such as “basic”, “advanced” and “superior” depending on their readiness to carry out the independent functions inside the car as well as to their effectiveness in 12 and 25 miles per hour tests.
