Salik, (which means ‘open’ or ‘clear’ in Arabic), is Dubai’s electronic road toll system. It was launched by Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in July 2007 with the goal of easing traffic along the main roads in Dubai, such as the Sheikh Zayed Road.
Salik tag
All cars in Dubai need to have a Salik tag. It is attached to the vehicle windshield, to allow it to operate, and when attached, it cannot be removed without damaging it, so the tag cannot be moved from one vehicle to another. The tag represents the latest generation technology in tolling, and it operates with no battery or moving parts, and works in all weather conditions and speeds. Salik tag uses the latest Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to positively identify the vehicle as it passes along the Salik tolling point.
Where can I buy Salik tag and how much does it cost?
You can buy your Salik Welcome Kit from any of the branches of ADNOC stations, Emirate petrol stations, EPPCO/ENOC stations, Emirates Bank and Dubai Islamic Bank. You have to fill in an application form to open a Salik account, or you can do it online at (www.salik.ae).
To get a salik tag first, you have to submit a photocopy of your car registration and pay 100 Dhs at any of the centres mentioned above (50 Dhs for the tag and 50 Dhs for the prepaid toll balance added to Sailk account). You must provide your phone number, and Salik can send you an sms with your account number, and when your credit is running low. Then, you have to stick the tag carefully on your windscreen following the instructions in the Salik package. Finally, Salik/RTA will send a PIN and account number to your mobile phone for online access.
What are the tolling points in Dubai?
There are six points:
- Al Barsha toll gate
- Al Garhoud Bridge toll gate (Al Garhood)
- Al Safa toll gate
- Al Maktoum Bridge toll gate (Al Maktoom)
- Al Mamzar toll gate (Al Mumzar)
- Airport Tunnel toll gate
Every time you pass through a point of these, a toll of Dh.4 will be charged, and you can only be charged a maximum of 24 AED per day. If you don’t have enough funds in your account, you should receive an SMS as a reminder and you should top up your account.
How can I recharge my Salik?
If you want to recharge your Salik Account using the Salik Recharge Card, scratch off the film on the back of Salik Recharge Card to expose the unique 12 digit number and then choose the recharge method that best suits your needs from the following methods:

Any fines?
As for fines, you will be charges with Dhs. 50 for passing through Salik gate without enough balance in account, with Dhs. 100 for passing through Salik gate without a tag and with Dhs 100. per month for delay in payment of fines.
