Traffic Penalties for Sudden Swerving in the UAE
Sudden swerving is one of the most dangerous traffic violations in Abu Dhabi that has caused a number of road deaths during last few years. The traffic law of the UAE was amended last year with a primary objective to penalize traffic offenders more effectively by introducing harsher penalties for dangerous traffic violations.
According to the new traffic law, a motorist will face a hefty fine of AED 1,000 and four black points will be issued against his/her driving license for sudden swerving. Motorists should recognize that sudden swerving is a dangerous traffic violation, which can result in road accidents involving multiple vehicles, particularly on highways due to the high-speed flow of traffic.

What Triggers Sudden Swerving?
Sudden swerving exhibits the reckless driving behavior and lack of respect shown by a motorist towards traffic rules. According to authorities, motorists can commit sudden swerving violation because of many different reasons.
These reasons are given below:
- Fatigue and stress
- Lack of attention while driving
- Exceeding speed limits
- Road accidents
- Negligence and carelessness

Sudden swerving drivers can commit many other violations at the same time, which increases the risk of a dangerous road accident significantly. Additionally, motorists can also face traffic penalties for multiple violations at the same time, which can put a serious dent in their wallet and also lead to the suspension of their driving license.
How to Change Lanes Safely?
Changing lanes can become safe and easy if motorists drive carefully with 100% attention on the road. While changing lanes, motorists should know that it is illegal to overtake from the right side, which is the first thing to consider when changing lanes to overtake the vehicle ahead.
To change lanes safely, motorists should:
- Use indicators to alert other drivers.
- Wait for the other lane to become empty and slowly move from one lane to another.
- Turn the indicators off after changing lanes.
- Maintain speed of the vehicle according to the speed of other vehicles in the lane. It becomes more important if motorists are trying to move to a faster lane as the influx of fast-approaching vehicles needs motorists to maintain a steady speed even after changing lanes.

Motorists should only change lanes when necessary and avoid changing lanes too frequently. Sudden swerving and its consequent dangerous road situations can be easily avoided with a careful approach and attentive driving. Authorities have increased their scrutiny of swerving drivers, which should also discourage motorists from committing this dangerous violation. A smooth flow of traffic can only be ensured if motorists play their role and help authorities in regulating traffic effectively.
