Recently qualified drivers can now put a sticker on their car windows warning other motorists that they have only just passed their test.
The Roads and Transport Authority has devised a series of “New Driver” stickers that will be sold to a trainee once he or she obtains their driving license.
“The idea of placing of the New Driver sticker was conceived after conducting a survey among driving learners of various ages, nationalities and categories who expressed their wish to see such a sticker placed on the vehicle once they are issued with driving licenses,” said Sultan Al Marzooki, the director of RTA Licensing.
“It is believed that such stickers would alert other motorists about them, and accordingly offer them a chance to implement what they have learnt during training and familiarize with the external driving environment. The stickers will remain fixed and displayed on vehicles for a period of six months maximum.”
The scheme has been implemented after being observed in practice in countries such as the UK, Japan and Australia.
“We have opted to apply it here in Dubai in an effort to promote the security and traffic safety on roads,” said Mr Al Marzooki.
“Affixing such stickers onto vehicles is optional for novice drivers, and they are sold at nominal fees, reflecting the costs of printing by driving institutes.”
A sticker that is placed on the rear window of the car costs Dh5, while a magnetic sticker on the back of the vehicle will cost Dh15.
