The traffic and licensing authorities in Dubai have made some important changes in the car registration process to simplify it for the well-being and convenience of customers. You can now easily get your new car registered or apply for re-registration of a vehicle in few simple steps and if you are a resident of the UAE, you can avail this facility anywhere in the country irrespective of the origin of your vehicle or documents. Customers can also now select from a variety of options provided by RTA to get their vehicle registered such as through insurance companies, online car registration and RTA Customer Service Centers.

Let’s explore how you can register or reregister a vehicle in Dubai in few simple steps.

Documentation and Procedure

An applicant must be resident of the UAE or GCC region to get his/her vehicle registered in Dubai. Applicants will need to submit the insurance certificate of the vehicle to initiate the registration process, however, the testing certificate of the vehicle will also be required for the reregistration of a vehicle, which is more than two years old.

Explained below is a fairly simple stepwise procedure that the UAE residents can follow to register their vehicles in Dubai:

  • Before applying for registration of a vehicle, applicants need to check the fines against their vehicles and settle the payments (if any). The fines against a vehicle can be checked through the Dubai Police website.
  • If your vehicle is more than two years old, you need to get it tested from one of the authorized traffic departments in Dubai or in other emirates. You can also take your car for testing to any of the RTA’s authorized facilities such as Tasjeel, Emarat Shamil, Eppco or Belhasa’s Wasel.
  • Pay the car registration fees.
  • If a bank financed car is no longer financed, you will need to bring the bank clearance certificate to complete the registration process.
  • Wait for the registration card that you should receive at your mailing address within five days, however, you can also visit the RTA facility to collect it yourself. The registration card will remain valid for one year.
  • On following the above-mentioned steps, you will be issued a sticker for new registration expiry date. You need to replace the old registration expiry date sticker with the new one on the rear number plate if you are reregistering a vehicle.

How Much Do I Have to Pay to Get My Vehicle Registered?

There are different fees for new and old vehicles as you will also have to pay for the vehicle test if you are reregistering an old vehicle. A fee of AED 120 is charged for the vehicle test while the fee for registration of a vehicle is AED 340. Besides the standard fees, service fees are also applicable that are charged according to the type of the vehicle while the commercial customers also have to pay some additional fees.

Personal Appearance Service by RTA

RTA puts the well-being of Dubieties before anything else and provides a variety of services for the registration of a vehicle, which makes the process absolutely hassle-free. The exclusive “Personal Appearance Service” is an ideal service provided by RTA for customers that are time-tied and cannot manage multiple visits (if required) to get their vehicle registered. The Personal Appearance Service attributes to the issuance of a PIN (Personal Identification Number) on the account of first visit of the applicant after which the applicant can send any person on his/her behalf to complete the car registration process.  It must be noted here that a PIN will only remain valid for one visit after which it will expire, which means the applicant will have to appear to get the PIN reissued if more visits are required.

Few Important Things to Keep in Mind

Apart from following the aforementioned steps to complete the registration process, you also need to keep in mind some other important things. You should ideally first check with your current insurance company to see if it offers the car registration service as RTA has authorized multiple companies to provide this services to customers in Dubai. It is important to check the fee structure of a company as some companies might charge extra fees for providing the car registration services. The RTA authorized companies that don’t charge any extra fees for registration process are Tasjeel, Emarat Shamil and Eppco.
