The UAE government is keen on protecting the public of traffic accidents and is taking all the necessary procedures to limit the effects of these accidents. In 2013 the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police launched various campaigns and initiatives to raise the public traffic awareness.
Among these campaigns, the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Abu Dhabi Police launches traffic awareness campaigns for students across all levels. During the first week of the new school year, the directorate introduces students of schools in Abu Dhabi to the ‘Golden Rule’ for using school buses, which is to move 10 steps ahead of the bus when exiting the bus and avoid bending down near the bus without the driver’s knowledge.
Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section in the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abu Dhabi Police, says: “Under the ‘Students Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility’ campaign, we have intensified awareness programs during the new school year. Traffic awareness covers two new schools in Abu Dhabi every day. It includes traffic awareness massages to be delivered to the pupils’ parents, urging them to adhere to traffic regulations, in order to protect students against traffic accidents.”
The program also includes a number of awareness initiatives under the sponsorship of Al Futtaim Motors. These initiatives will run across the entire year through the Abu Dhabi traffic program to put a limit to traffic accidents ‘Together’ on social media websites such as: Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
Parents who drive their children to school are encouraged to refrain from stopping randomly in front of school entrances in order to avoid traffic jams. He also urged bus drivers and supervisors to adhere to traffic safety instructions and stop only in designated areas, as well as refraining from overloading school buses.
Traffic Awareness officers in Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate in Abu Dhabi Police, comments on this program saying: “This student traffic campaign is a competition that aims to engage students and raise their education and awareness on traffic. It has three main aspects: traffic research, which includes a traffic film produced by students, a traffic photo album and traffic flyers; a traffic gallery; and an awareness idea that will help educate students.”
The directorate is also distributing five educational traffic films on social websites. The films focus on traffic safety rules such as crossing roads and using seatbelts in addition to the ‘Golden Rule’ for using school buses. Additionally, the programs broadcasts awareness messages via radio to provide traffic safety for students.
