Summer to watch over car tires

According to al Ain Police officer said: “it does not matter the quality of the car or the driver who drives it. However, what matters indeed is the quality of the tires and how should be worthy with road synchronizing with the scorching summer in the UAE.

At this account, tire technicians and police recommend motorists to check their tires systematically as a matter of fact driving with worn out tires could put lives at risk.

“Tires are a serious issue in summer,” said an Al Ain police officer.

He pointed out that Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate had already launched a three-month campaign called ‘A Summer without Accidents’ in a bid to raise awareness among motorists.

As part of the initiative drivers are being asked to check their tires and to change them if any signs of damage appear, said the officer.

Salim Khan, an automobile tire expert in Al Ain, said people needed to be educated on tyres as the majority of them did not know how to check them. Many drivers, he said, were also not in the habit of checking their tyres regularly.

“It is a dangerous negligence that could result in horrific consequences,” Khan said.

Police and technicians both recommend a thorough tyre check-up before a driver embarks on a journey in the current sweltering weather. The advice comes as increasing incidents of tyres bursting, especially on highways, are being reported.

A driver can easily check the normal wear and tear and tread depth of a tyre. But if he is not sure, he must contact a tyre technician.

“It’s a technical matter and you cannot afford to neglect them,” said Khan.

He said traffic police must provide printed guidelines to drivers at the time of vehicle registration.

“Faulty or worn out tires are a major factor in road accidents in the country and drivers’ ignorance has been playing a big role in it,” he added.

Abdul Mannan, another technician in Al Ain, said tyre safety depends on various factors including heat, use of brakes, wheel balance, the vehicle’s load, air pressure, the age of the tyres and the original quality of the tyres.

“You must consult a specialist if you do not know how to check them,” he said, while warning that most tyre sellers in the market are also not qualified to conduct an inspection.

He said quality tires should be used.

“A good tire can withstand up to 250C, providing enhanced safety against tyre bursting,” he said.

Air pressure in tires is very important in hot weather, said the technicians. This pressure must be in accordance with the vehicle’s load and the speed it is normally driven. All vehicles have a manual in which manufacturers give guidance about tire inflation.

Khan recommends the use of nitrogen gas instead of air. He said it gets comparatively less hot than air which minimizes the chance of tires bursting. Also tires must be rotated at regular intervals. This means changing the front pair with the rear ones at least every six months.

“This creates a balance in the tires’ age and also gives an opportunity to the motorists to check the tires’ health,” he added.

Mannan said people tend to not pay much attention to spare tires. If they are not properly maintained and checked this could be very dangerous. He said one of his customer’s car had recently been damaged when a spare tire exploded in the boot. Luckily the car was stationary at the time.

Both technicians also pointed out a dangerous trend among drivers. They said most drivers use cheap tyres without considering the actual dimensions and standards. Such people must remember that car manufacturers pay special attention to tyres.

“They take into account various factors such as the make, size, and tread pattern,” they said.

The original tyres not only suit the car but also play a role in its stable movement and speed.
