The Roads and Transport Authority has increased the fares charged by the taxis plying the routes in Dubai.
The increment is, however, subtle since many taxi users have not noticed. Some taxi drivers themselves are in the dark about this.
The hike includes a Dubai Taxi fare increment of six per cent, and for airport taxis by 12 per cent. On the ground, the former results in a rise from Dh1.71 per kilometre to Dh1.82 while the latter has gone up from Dh1.75 to Dh1.96 per kilometre.
Many of the drivers have pointed to the deregulation of the fuel prices as the cause of the hike in the fares. They, however, do not expect to make sizeable profits off the recent developments since they deem the increment to be too small.
Regular taxi drivers feel in the long run they will feel the pinch in their wallets, with some claiming to revert to using the metro in the coming times.
