In framework of its work and commitment to providing world-class sustainable and integrated transportation infrastructure pending with its Surface Transport Master Plan (STMP), the Department of Transport (DoT) in Abu Dhabi pointed out that it has finished working on the first phase of traffic improvements on Abu Dhabi City entrances and exits, in order to ensure safe, smooth and problem-free vehicle flow to various areas inside the emirate.

The First Phase of the traffic amendments and improvements based on road expansion of the Sheikh Zayed Road for vehicles coming from Al Maqta Bridge go towards Abu Dhabi City. The roadworks implemented on the ground made room for the increase of lanes from three to four and from two to three at some points, adjusting ground lines, fixing up traffic signals in addition to asphalt surface removal and placement of a new asphalt layer in order to boost and provide the road capacity to withstand the expected increase of number of vehicles.

Department of Transport (DoT) carried out the project as a part of the plan set by the Safety and Traffic Solutions Committee in a record time of 120 hours of progressive work with no accidents, ensuring the challenges of the road network infrastructure and users are immediately addressed.

The Committee concerned in solving traffic problems consists of a number of partners including Department of Transport (DoT), Abu Dhabi Police (ADP), Abu Dhabi City Municipality (ADM), and Urban Planning Council (UPC).

The project of spreading out and widening Sheikh Zayed Road is in three phases, with the second and third phases which are going to set off in a little while later encompassing widening the same road near by the Ministries Complex towards Al Maqta Bridge and at the entrance of Al Maqta Bridge from both sides in order to accommodate the growing number of vehicles whilst offering world-class safety standards for all users.

After all, the Department of Transport (DoT) has embarked on field studies and surveys on congested areas, including Sheikh Zayed Road, and designed solutions ensuring smoother and better vehicle flow, especially at the rush hours owing to the increasing number of cars.

In conclusion, following the completion of phase one of the project, the Department is monitoring vehicle movement to compare the new reality with previous status and to respond to any urgent issues which may occur. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
