Unstable Mercedes-Benz A-Class

When renowned German car maker Mercedes Benz introduced to the car market a small comparatively cheap car lauded as having the safety of the big ones, there was great anticipation for the launch of the said car into large scale automotive export.

A car magazine out of Sweden decided to carry out an independent car assessment to really see if all the car information being bandied about by the giant car manufacturing company was all that. This brought into play the Moose test, a test designed to see if the automobile is stable on the ground if it is jerked around at a continuous speed without braking.

In this case the Mercedes Benz A Class, fully loaded, was driven at 65kph and jerked out of its lane and then back. It did not manage to make its way back into the original lane. The small car tipped over, wheels spinning resignedly in the air.

The parent company halted production of the model and recalled the more than 2,000 examples it had given out so that it could save its reputation. The problem was rectified and the A class was successful but the curtains were closed on it in 2012 when it went out of production.
