Takata Corp. a leading supplier of Airbags and other car parts for many successful car brands is in serious turmoil with its Airbags getting recalled twice in a short span of time. The recall for 40 million more airbags follows the earlier recalling of 28.8 million airbags of the company. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made an announcement for the recall, on Wednesday after having hours of discussion with the company. The main problem that has led to the recalling of the airbags lies in the tendency of the airbags to absorb moisture and rupture consistently with rising levels of humidity. At least 10 deaths have been recorded because of the forceful bursting of Airbags, spraying the shrapnel towards the drivers and those on the front seats. There is also news of few more deaths caused by airbags rupture in Malaysia which adds to the tally of the deaths recorded.

Major Car Maker affected by Recalling of Airbags

Most of the major car makers having installed the Takata airbags in their vehicles are also facing the trouble now. The list of car makers includes many giants of the auto industry including, Toyota, Honda, Fiat and the recently added Tesla vehicles by Takata.

Solution of the Airbags Problem

The NHTSA, along with recalling the Takata Corp airbags, also suggested a solution not only for Takata but also for other companies to improve the quality of the airbags for improved safety. The NHTSA suggested that the airbags must have a desiccant to tolerate the high humidity levels and reduce moisture. The recalls only feature a specific type of airbags made by Takata which are more susceptible to moisture intrusion caused by a consistent exposure to high humidity.

Expanded Recalls also in Plan

An administrator of NHTSA, Mark Rose Kind, told the press that this issue is of urgent nature as the defected airbags are prone to further deterioration with the passage of time. Five expanded recalls are also in the plan which will happen in the time from now till 2019. The Takata Corp has been facing great losses but is cooperating well with the authorities to improve the situation.
