Every five years and for a period of six months, the World Expo attracts millions of international visitors. Throughout the history of the event, there has never been a host from any country in the Middle East, Africa and South East Asia. The next one, set for 2020, will change all that.
In November, the UAE placed a bid to host the World Expo 2020 in Dubai under the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future.’ When the winner was announced, a new page was turned in the history of this international exhibition. This event will be a key event for Dubai, and for the UAE as a nation, for three main reasons: Dubai is an up-and-coming city in all possible sectors on a global scale; the impressive number of visitors throughout the period will have quite an impact on the national economy, which is already on the rise; and because one of Dubai’s strengths has always been offering new ideas to the world and this event would present quite an opportunity in many ways.
The main theme of Expo 2020 will be:
Sustainability – lasting sources of energy and water
Mobility – smart systems of logistics and transportation
Opportunity – new paths to economic development
As Dubai is really making a huge impression on the global stage when it comes to innovation, this exhibition will be a unique meeting place for the international community to join together and develop creative and innovative solutions for the overall theme. The theme serves as a basis for discussion in exploring the interdependency of all three aspects and forging partnerships to achieve the implied goals.
World Expos have always been the welcoming place for new concepts, almost like the foyer bringing new ideas into reality from the world of imagination. These ideas are what have driven humanity’s growth and development as a whole for many, many years. In keeping with the innovation that these exhibitions represent, a new program will be introduced in 2020: Expo Live. A series of workshops and seminars joined with funding and global collaboration, this program will in a sense guide the brainstorming processes that the world hopes to achieve at this exhibition. The end results will hopefully push everyone’s minds further toward solutions of the global problems that we share, and that are emphasized in the 2020 theme.
While Expo Live will be holding workshops and partnership-building events throughout the world leading up to the Dubai Expo, let us collectively hope that some major innovative changes are designed that might serve to benefit us sooner rather than later.
